Assessments

At Language Space, I offer a personalised approach to assessment that ensures assessments are specific and tailored to your child's needs.

An assessment will:

  • evaluate your child's speech, language or communication abilities.
  • provide a clear understanding of areas of need.
  • outline how difficulties are impacting on day to day life, such as on interactions with peers or learning at school.
  • explore how other areas of development, such as motor skills, attention, anxiety, or cognitive abilities, might be impacting on your child's speech, language or communication skills.

Following assessment, I provide you with recommendations for support and discuss any possible next steps, such as therapy sessions or school programs.

Highly detailed, stand-alone assessments are also provided as required, for example to inform Annual Reviews or contribute to EHCP processes.

What does an assessment involve?

Assessments are tailored to the individual needs of your child.  Most assessments involve:

  • Consultation with parents: A meeting is arranged via Zoom or telephone to discuss your child's developmental and communication history and talk through current areas of strength and need.  It is helpful to understand how your child communicates with you at home and in other familiar settings.  A discussion with nursery or school can also take place as required.
  • Direct assessment: One or more assessment session is arranged with your child to get to know them and to evaluate their speech, language or communication abilities.  These sessions can be in person or online, according to your preference.  Assessment can involve both informal assessment (conversation-based/ play-based activities) and formal standardised measures which provide standardised scores and percentiles.
  • Feedback meeting: Following assessment, a feedback meeting is arranged with families to discuss the outcome of assessment, talk through recommendations and, if required, advise on possible therapy sessions. I can also speak with nursery or school to feedback on assessment findings and recommendations as required.
  • Written report: A report is provided at the end of the assessment process.  This details assessment findings and recommendations for support.
