Therapy

Therapy looks different for every child and is planned around their needs, motivations and interests.  I use a variety of techniques and evidence-based approaches and ensure that activities are fun, engaging and interesting to each child.

The focus of therapy is guided by a child's assessment and through discussion with parents, nursery or school. Where possible, children and young people are also involved in setting and prioritising goals to work on.

What does therapy involve?

Direct therapy is offered in a block of 6 or 8 sessions.  These are usually weekly and take place at home, nursery, school or online.  Individual therapy sessions are 30-60 minutes, depending on the needs of the individual child, as well as external factors such as school timetables. Paired or group therapy for children with similar needs can be arranged via nursery or school.

Specific goals, targets or focus areas are agreed at the beginning of a block of sessions and reviewed after a set number of sessions.  I work closely with families, nurseries and schools throughout the block to ensure that strategies and techniques are relevant to the child and can be carried over into day to day life.

Alternatives to direct therapy

Sometimes direct therapy is not required and other approaches are recommended.  These might include:

  • Introducing classroom strategies to support attention and listening or language development in class.
  • Establishing playground strategies or buddy systems to support social communication and peer relationships.
  • Establishing a targeted speech or language program of activities to be carried out by school or nursery.
  • Providing training to families or school around specific communication techniques.
